Nowadays, creating an environmentally reliable vehicle by reducing the volume of harmful exhaust emissions in it is a global issue of humanity. For this reason, one of the main directions in which scientific research is carried out is the improvement of the exhaust gas cleaning system of internal combustion engines. However, to date there are no universal designs and effective methods that would improve the performance of the exhaust gas cleaning system of internal combustion engines. In this regard, the development of new designs of the vehicle exhaust system based on an effective cleaning method is an urgent task. The article presents the results of scientific and experimental research of the authors on the development of new designs of automobile muffler, working on the basis of the method of electric pulse cleaning, designed to reduce the concentration of harmful emissions of exhaust gases of the car. An experimental installation of an electric pulse muffler is described, which implements the principle of purification of automobile exhaust gases by accelerating the process of ionization of gas particles, by applying an electric shock discharge to the electrodes, mounted inside the muffler. Experimental data on changes in gas transparency depending on changes in the distance between the electrodes were obtained. Thus, empirical dependences of gas transparency values on changes in the distance between the electrodes were established on the basis of the regression-correlation analysis performed.
